What to See in Naxos: The Island’s Highlights

The Portara: Naxos Most Iconic Landmark
The trademark of Naxos is, of course, Portara. It is one of the first things you should definitely visit upon arrival. It doesn’t matter how many photos you have seen from friends or in various social media posts. When you see it up close, it is completely different. It stands proudly, on a small island, opposite Chora. It is all that is left of a temple built thousands of years ago, and yet it seems to belong to the present. As the sun sets, the scenery changes and it is that magical time of day that you don’t want it to end. The sky changes colors, the sea becomes calm and the light passes through the stone, which attracts the eyes of travelers. It is the ultimate landscape for capturing moments with your camera.
Venetian Old Town and Charming Mountain Villages
The island of Naxos has two sides that are worth seeing. On the one hand, its old town with its picturesque alleys and Venetian atmosphere takes you to other times and on the other, the mountain villages, where tradition is revived through simple everyday moments. There is no shortage of the warmth of the people, local food and authentic flavors. Specifically:
The Castle of Chora: A medieval fortress that dominates the island and offers you incredible views. You will see paved streets and hidden small shops and traditional cafes around it.
Apeiranthos: A mountain village full of life, also known as the “marble village”. It is famous for its special architecture and its hospitable residents. You will encounter a unique artistic spirit that is reflected in the five small museums it has.
Chalki: The old capital of Naxos, with neoclassical mansions, small galleries and the famous citron distillery of the Vallindra family, which has been operating since 1896 and is one of the oldest distilleries in the Cyclades.
Kinidaros: One of the villages of Naxos with a deep musical tradition, which keeps the soul of the island alive. Here music is a way of life. In the summer, dancing and singing last until late in the morning.

Temples and Treasures of Naxos
As the Cycladic island of Naxos is a place that hides centuries of history in every corner, you cannot miss seeing some of its archaeological sites that host temples and monuments of years. And here, myth and reality are woven together.
The Temple of Demeter – In Sangri, among grains and myths
Built in the 6th century BC, the marble temple of the goddess of fertility dominates among fields and low hills. Where the ancients honored Demeter and Persephone, today you can admire the restoration and feel for a while a member of another era.
The Kouros of Melano – A fallen giant in the forest
In the middle of nature, among olive trees and shady paths, lies an unfinished Kouros, a sculpture over 6 meters high, which was never completed. It is one of those moments when silence speaks louder than words. A trace of an artist who suddenly stopped, but left behind something eternal.
The Kouros of Apollo – The calm power of marble
Just before the entrance to the port, near the village of Apollonas, another Kouros awaits you, this time more imposing and more accessible. Overlooking the sea, it looks as if it is eternally gazing at the horizon. Perhaps Apollo never left the island. Perhaps he is simply resting here.
Naxos is a destination that combines it all: history, natural wealth, tradition and hospitable people. Its beauty does not stop at the crystal clear waters but extends to the ancient sights and spontaneous festivities in the squares.
