3 + 1 Things to Do on Naxos Island

Naxos is one of those places that just click with you. It’s the biggest island in the Cyclades and somehow manages to keep a charm, away from the usual tourist rush. A visitor can discover endless sandy beaches, mountains dotted with ancient ruins, as well as little villages where anyone can wander without a plan. The main town, Chora, is lively but still cozy, with plenty of spots to taste delicious, fresh food made by locals who clearly love what they do. If you seek a little bit more of adventure, hiking up Mount Zas is a must! The views from the top are totally worth the climb. It would be said that it’s the kind of place that feels like a home away from home, perfect for a real Greek island experience. For you, who plan a visit and wonder what to do in Naxos, Naxos Skyline has prepared a list of things that are worth trying there.

Relax on Stunning Beaches

There’s something about the coastline of Naxos that makes you forget what time it is. Maybe it’s the way the waves roll in or how the sand feels warm under every beach lover’s feet without burning. Whatever it is, this island knows how to slow you down in the best possible way. Here are a few must-visit beaches:

  • Plaka Beach: Plaka feels like the kind of beach you never want to leave. Long stretches of soft sand, crystal-clear waters and just enough beach bars to keep things easy. It’s quiet without feeling empty. It’s the ideal place for those who want a long, peaceful walk under the sunlight or love swimming and snorkeling.

  • Agios Prokopios:
Just a short drive from the main town, this beach is a favorite for its powdery sand and calm, shallow waters. It’s perfect for families and anyone looking for a tranquil spot to relax.

  • Agia Anna: Agia Anna is the kind of beach where you kick off your shoes, wade into calm, clear water and forget about everything else. A few family-run tavernas are just steps away, perfect for a bite after a swim, with a sunset that speaks for itself. Agia Anna offers a great combination of relaxation and local gastronomy. It’s near Agios Prokopios.

  • Mikri Vigla: Mikri Vigla’s got this cool mix of chill vibes and energy. It’s a hotspot which windsurfers and kiteboarders prefer because the wind here really picks up. Also, it’s known for its turquoise waters. The natural beauty alone is worth the visit.

  • Chalki Beach: It feels like a treasure in Naxos as it’s calm, peaceful and away from the crowds. Enjoy a serene setting surrounded by nature while you take a lazy swim. Don’t forget to visit local tavernas nearby in order to have a simple, tasty meal with your company, without any fuss.

Wander Through Time in Chora and the Portara

The heart of Naxos beats strongest in its main town, Chora. Here, history whispers from every narrow lane and around every corner. The Venetian castle, known as the Kastro, stands watch above the town, its stone walls winding down into an enchanting maze of cobbled streets. Strolling through these alleys, you’ll find vibrant bougainvillea spilling over whitewashed walls, small shops selling handmade crafts and cozy cafés where the local rhythm unfolds slowly. Not far from the harbor, the Portara stands tall. It’s an ancient marble doorway that belonged to a temple dedicated to Apollo centuries ago. It frames stunning views of the sea and sky, making it a favorite spot to catch the sunset. As the sun dips, the sky bursts into colors that make this place feel almost timeless.

Taste the Local Flavours

There’s something about food in Naxos that makes everything taste richer and more real. Maybe it’s the island’s strong farming roots or the sea breeze that seems to work its way into every dish. Whatever it is, your taste buds are in for a treat. Here are a few things you won’t want to miss.

● Naxian cheeses
The island is really famous for its variety of cheeses. Arseniko is the one you’ll hear locals talk about most. It’s firm, a little spicy and carries the kind of flavor that lingers in a good way. Then, there’s Xynomizithra, soft and creamy, that pairs perfectly with fresh bread, olive oil, or even some honey.

● Fresh seafood & local food experiences
Wander into a seaside taverna and you’re likely to spot octopus drying in the sun or today’s catch being grilled over charcoal. Whether it’s grilled squid, red mullet, or a simple fillet with lemon and herbs, the flavors are clean and bold.

● Kitron liqueur
You’ll find the bright bottles of Kitron in shops around the island. This liqueur is a true Naxian specialty. It is made from the leaves of the citron tree. Kitron comes in a few different versions, from sweet and smooth to dry and punchy. Sip it after dinner or bring a bottle home. It really tastes like summer in a glass.

+1 Step Into an Extra Adventure

Sometimes, the best parts of a trip aren’t the ones you planned. In Naxos, one minute you’re following a dusty path, the next you’re standing somewhere you didn’t expect. If you’ve got curiosity and a bit of an adventurous streak, this island will meet you right there.

  • Hike to the Summit of Mount Zas
This is a must for nature lovers and mythology buffs. Standing at 1,004 meters, Mount Zas is the highest peak in the Cyclades and, according to legend, where the king of the gods grew up. The hike will absolutely reward you with breathtaking views of the Aegean, rocky landscapes and total peace. It is suggested that you go early to catch the sunrise. It’s pure magic.

  • Windsurfing at Mikri Vigla
Mikri Vigla is world-renowned for its steady winds, making it a hotspot for windsurfers of all levels. The shallow, turquoise water and consistent breeze attract pros, beginners and those just looking to try something new. You’ll find gear rentals and you can have  lessons, too. Don’t miss it!

  • Explore the Cave of Zeus
Just outside the village of Filoti, this ancient cave is steeped in mythology. It’s said to be the place where Zeus was raised and stepping inside feels like walking through a slice of myth. The short uphill trek is scenic and once inside, the cool, echoing chamber is both mysterious and awe-inspiring.
